Dental Health Care
Excellent dental health care is essential in treating and preventing bad breath.
The key features of dental health care are:
Brushing teeth
Brush the teeth at least twice a day. After every meal is best, but not always practical. Make sure you brush for at least 2 minutes, covering all angles of the teeth plus the sides of the mouth and the tongue.
Use a soft -medium toothbrush to ensure that you don't damage the gums while brushing. Make sure you change your toothbrush regularly eg every 6-8 weeks, otherwise bacteria from the mouth can 'take up home' in the toothbrush and be re-infecting every time you use it.
Don't share your toothbrush with anybody - no matter how much you love them! your balance of oral bacteria will be different to your partners, so a shared toothbrush will act as a way of cross infection.
Electric toothbrushes are best. They usually have a timer, so you will brush your teeth for the required time, plus they are less likely to scratch or cut the gums.
The best type is a sonic toothbrush which uses sonic waves to clean in between the teeth as well.
Flossing
Flossing after brushing will get rid of the plaque and food particles in between the teeth.
There are many types of floss from simple tape to floss that has fluffy, brissley edges to brush between the teeth.
Sonic flossers are also available and are excellent, as the ultra-sonic waves get even further between the teeth and remove more plaque and debris
Mouthwash
After brushing and flossing, its a good idea to use mouthwash. Mouthwash will get rid of any final pieces of debris left behind after brushing and flossing.
Many mouthwashes are medicated or antiseptic and will help to treat or prevent bad breath.
Make sure you buy a alcohol-free mouthwash. Alcohol in the mouthwash can dry out the mouth causing bad breath.
Regular dental check ups
Make sure you visit the dentist for your 6 month check ups.
Any early signs of decay or disease will be spotted and treated at the early stage.
